A name-blind algorithm watched 28 clubs across 95 regime changes and flagged 31 major falls. Only 16 ever climbed back — Norwich in 50 months, Ipswich stuck below their old level for 282 and counting.

The most-used measure of a manager has a blind spot: the starting point. Across 433 tenures at 49 clubs, those handed a club in the top 10% of its own history lost 34 Elo points on average, while those who inherited a bottom-40% slump gained 62.
