Home advantage at a World Cup is huge — worth about 17 points on the win-rate scale. But it stops at the border: the host's continent gets nothing. Every host since 1930, measured.
Every host nation tells itself the same story: the crowd, the familiar pitches, the time zone, the kind referee — it all adds up to an edge. And every neighbouring country hopes a little of it rubs off. We tested both halves of that belief against the record: 22 World Cups since 1930, every host measured against its opponent-adjusted, neutral-site rating — what the team "should" have done on paper, anywhere.
It Pays to Host — If You're the Host
Home advantage at a World Cup is real and large — but does it spill over to the host's whole continent? We measured every host's tournament result against its opponent-adjusted, neutral-site strength rating across 22 World Cups. The bump is enormous for the host nation, and a mirage for everyone else nearby.
Method. 964 World Cup matches. Each team's result-share vs its opponent-adjusted expectation from pre-tournament NT-Elo computed at a neutral site — so the “boost” is the full host effect, ordinary home advantage included. Host = a nation that played a non-neutral match (i.e. at home); host-continent = same confederation as a host. Elo from ~49k results (martj42); confederations from the FIFA dataset.
Hosting is worth about seventeen points
The host-nation bump is one of the biggest edges in the sport: +17.3 points per game above neutral expectation, consistently somewhere between 10 and 24 points. Uruguay won every game it played in 1930; Italy, Argentina and France all lifted the trophy at home; South Korea rode it to a semi-final in 2002. Whatever "home advantage" is made of, at a World Cup it is real, large, and repeats across a century.
But the continent gets nothing
Here's the half nobody checks. Teams from the host's continent — same confederation, same broad region — overperform by -3.4 points: statistically zero. The edge is the host's alone. It doesn't travel to the neighbours, because the things that create it — your crowd, your beds, your refs reading your home support — belong to one nation, not a landmass.
When the crowd isn't enough
Hosting amplifies; it doesn't guarantee. Qatar 2022 became the first host to lose all three group games — the worst host performance ever measured, more than 30 points below its billing. Even Brazil in 2014 underperformed its sky-high expectation on the way to that 7–1. The bump is a tailwind, not a parachute.
Which sets up 2026. Three hosts — the United States, Canada and Mexico — each inherit that home tailwind in their own matches, and history says it's worth real points. But if the pitch is that a World Cup on home soil lifts CONCACAF or the wider Americas, the last century is blunt: it lifts whoever's actually at home, and no one else.
