Young Searchers Skip Google for TikTok

Half of US consumers — and 65% of Gen Z — now search inside TikTok. That quietly drains roughly $1.3bn a year from the lifestyle-search ad pool, and the money is only starting to follow young attention.

Young Searchers Skip Google for TikTok

Half of US consumers now treat TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% to 49% between 2024 and 2026, and 65% of Gen Z have searched there too. When someone wants a recipe, a restaurant or a product, they increasingly watch a short video instead of typing into Google. Over 60% of product discovery already runs through social video. We estimate this drains about $1.3bn a year from the roughly $52bn US lifestyle-search ad pool.

The market underprices this because usage has separated from stated preference — only 4% of Gen Z actually prefer TikTok over Google, so the threat looks smaller than the behaviour shows. But advertisers follow eyeballs, not survey answers.

Alphabet (Google) loses the high-value lifestyle and local queries first. Yelp and Tripadvisor depend on people searching for places to eat and visit — exactly the queries moving to video. Pinterest competes for the same discovery moments. Meta Platforms both gains (Instagram search) and loses, as its ad share is contested by TikTok's new search ads.

Why this matters. A whole generation increasingly looks for restaurants, products and how-to answers inside TikTok videos instead of typing into Google. The lifestyle and local advertising that pays for written search results is the first to drain away. Anyone who lends to, runs or invests in search-dependent publishers and ad sellers should watch where young attention — and the money chasing it — is moving.

Attention is climbing. the market is starting to price this in — the early window is closing.
We model the yearly hit to US lifestyle-search ad revenue at $1.3bn most likely (range $879m to $2.0bn), about 2.53% of the roughly $52bn lifestyle ad pool — driven by 49% of US consumers and 65% of Gen Z now using TikTok as a search engine (Adobe Express, 2026). The fall in firm Gen Z preference for TikTok over Google, from 8% to 4% (Adobe Express, 2024–2026), caps how far this can go but not the direction. Usage has already pulled away from preference, and that gap is what reprices the advertising.
