The Vanishing Search Click

AI answer boxes settle the question before anyone clicks through. Our model puts the loss at $2.4 billion a year on a $12 billion affiliate base — and the click is disappearing, not migrating.

The Vanishing Search Click

AI answer boxes now resolve the question right on the search page. The reader gets what they came for and never clicks through. That click is what earns an affiliate commission, so when it disappears, so does the income. The numbers are already on the board: no-click searches rose from 56% to 69% of Google queries, and referrals to 2,500-plus news sites fell 33% in 2025. Our model puts the annual hit at $2.4 billion against a $12 billion click-dependent affiliate base.

The market still treats this as a temporary ranking slump that will recover. It will not. ChatGPT and rivals replace under 0.1% of lost traffic — the click is not moving elsewhere, it is gone. Publishers themselves expect referrals to fall a further 43% by 2029.

Ziff Davis and Dotdash Meredith (owned by IAC) run large review and affiliate site networks built on search visits. Future plc depends on the same buying-guide traffic. Red Ventures built its model on search-led recommendations. BuzzFeed leans on commerce content that needs the click. Each loses the very visits its revenue rests on.

Why this matters. AI answer boxes settle the question inside the search page, so people stop clicking through to the websites that earn affiliate commissions on those clicks. The creators, review sites and publishers built on search traffic lose the visits their entire business model depends on. Any lender, operator or investor still treating this as a temporary search-ranking dip is mispricing a permanent shrinkage in how many paying clicks the whole referral economy can ever produce.

Our judgment — no hard proof; ChatGPT sends under 0.1% of traffic, so the lost click is not migrating.

Digiday 2025
A bottom-up model on the $12 billion US affiliate base that depends on clicks points to $2.4 billion of revenue cut off each year — matched independently by Raptive's roughly $2 billion creator ad-revenue loss estimate. It is driven by no-click searches rising from 56% to 69% of Google queries and a 33% fall in referrals to creator and publisher sites in 2025. With ChatGPT replacing under 0.1% of lost traffic and publishers projecting a further 43% referral decline by 2029, the case for a permanent shift is closed.
