Audiobooks Steal Podcast Ad Hours

Audiobooks have tripled their share of the listening day since 2016, quietly pulling hours away from ad-supported podcasts. The podcast ad market is still growing — and hasn't noticed yet.

Audiobooks Steal Podcast Ad Hours

Americans now spend 8% of their daily audio time on audiobooks, up from 3% in 2016, and the number of daily listeners has grown 167%. Every hour that moves to a paid audiobook is an hour that pays a platform directly instead of an advertiser. Yet US podcast ad revenue still grew 17.6% in 2025 to $2.86 billion, so the market sees no problem. That is why it underprices the threat: the loss shows up as growth that simply doesn't arrive, not as a visible drop. Our model puts about $155 million a year at risk, rising toward $225 million if current trends hold.

Spotify (SPOT) is most exposed: its audiobook listening hours jumped 37% in one year, and over half of those listeners are the young, premium audience advertisers pay up for. Amazon's Audible (AMZN) anchors the paid model the whole shift runs on. iHeartMedia (IHRT) and Sirius XM (SIRI) lean heavily on ad-supported audio and would feel any drift toward paid hours most.

Why this matters. Time spent on paid audiobooks is rising fast, and every hour that moves there is an hour advertisers no longer reach. The podcast ad business hasn't reacted because its own revenue is still climbing. Lenders, operators, and investors backing podcast advertising should care because the listeners most at risk of switching are the young, premium audience advertisers pay the most to reach.

Attention is climbing. the market is starting to price this in — the early window is closing.
In our central case, audiobook listening pulls about $155 million of the $2.86 billion US podcast ad market into yearly risk — 5.41% of the base. If Edison's audiobook reach trend (up 167% since 2016) and Spotify's 37% one-year listening growth keep compounding into the 18-to-34 premium audience, that exposure rises toward $225 million. We rate the lasting-shift likelihood at 55%: the model swap is confirmed, but the platform steering that would speed it up is not yet locked in.
